The first thing one notices is the beautiful blue dial. It has a wave pattern that hardly distracts from the well marked hours and the 24 hour GMT subdial markers. The red GMT hand moves around the dial in 24 hours with each hour marker advancing the second timezone by two hours.

Kivel is quick to point out mistakes that other watch repair shops are regularly guilty of. According to him it isn't a matter of honesty, but rather time and skill. Most watch makers are overworked, underpaid, and under-educated. You need the right parts and the right education. Central Watch has direct relationships with most of the big watch makers - especially Rolex, whom they have been buying parts from for decades. Kivel would love to expand and hire more watch makers, but they aren't as easy to find as one might imagine. Large brands pluck up the best people, but many like the prospects of working at a place like Central Watch.

The black rhodium plating also provides more color and contrast, yielding a movement that is quite striking. Kind of reminds me of the Glashutte PanoInverse. Not Patek-level finishing, but quite good.

My personal favorite in the art collection for 2012 is the watch at the top of this article. It uses a Santos-Dumont XL case and displays a horse. The process is actually micro mosaic. From counters to coffee tables, stone or tile, mosaic is a popular and celebrated craft. Here, the art of mosaic work blends with gold engraving. Parts of the horse are engraved gold, while the majority of the dial is a hand-created mosaic of gemstones. According to Cartier, each piece of this limited edition collection requires over 120 hours of work to complete. Each stone must be individually selected, cut, and placed to form the image. This watch is called the Cartier Santos-Dumont XL watch, horse motif, gemstone mosaic and will come in a set of 40 pieces in 18k white gold, and 10 more pieces with diamonds on the case.

The rest of the 51mm tall by 43 mm wide case of the watch is aDLC coated steel that is brushed with slight satin polished rounded corners, giving it a manly yet slightly shiny look and feel. The aDLC coating is supposed to be an improvement on DLC with features such as being highly scratch-resistant and being less prone to fingerprint marks. Just like most Cartier watches, the Santos' caseback is solid and includes the Cartier name in that classic font as well as the model name.

The watch is part of a relationship between UK-based watch brand Bremont and The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth, England. The final piece will be unveiled in July 2012 during an event aboard the ship. This is the second Bremont limited edition watch to contain parts from an historic military machine. They did this first in the Mustang P-51 timepiece covered here.

MTM is an American company based out of here in Los Angeles. You get that nice "USA" label on the back of the case in addition to their dagger logo. I think they should supply a dagger like that with the watches. You do however get a nice Pelican case carrrying box. Those cases are damn useful actually. Inside the MTM Falcon as I said is a custom made movement for MTM. It is quartz, and I believe Japanese. The Titanium Black on Black Falcon is among the more expensive pieces in the collection at a price of 0. The Falcon pieces however start at about 0 in steel. This piece might be worth the additional expense because the combo of titanium and DLC coating offer reduced weight without the easy scratching you usually get with naked titanium. You can get this and other MTM timepieces via their website here.

This Zenith timepiece isn't normally the type of thing you'd guess a watch collector would wear, but that is exactly who this new limited edition Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 watch was produced for. 2012 has Zenith focusing on their heritage as a pilot watch maker. The grandest example of that is this rather huge 57.5mm wide Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 timepiece, which I will just call the "Type 20" for now.

The DB25 IX Maya is also know as the DB25 Ninth Maya Underworld. Again, I don't know what that means and to be honest the story is cool but I don't really care about the details. I think the art is nice and Mayan culture sounds fun and all. Though I don't have a connection to it, and if I ever traveled back in time I would avoid the entire region for fear of my head being sacrificially severed... and my heart then perhaps eaten. The artistry is amazing and I do appreciate the watch for that a lot. This is probably not going to be your first De Bethune watch - as for the price I would recommend more suitable entries into the brand. Limited to only 12 pieces, the DB25 IX Maya watch retails for 90,000 Swiss Francs.

The WW1 Heure Sautante timepieces don't inherently need to be in precious metal cases, but it helps Bell & Ross define the collection and concept. There is a simplicity to the designs that really asserts some of the minimalistic values the brand has. These are hard timepieces not to like, as they look striking on the wrist. Inside the watches are base ETA automatic movements which have been decorated and augmented with special jumping hour modules. These modules offer the time with instant-jumping hour and a power reserve indicator. There is a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback on the rear of the watch. And the cases are water resistant to 50 meters.

So how exactly do the Proximity watch and iPhone work together? I got to check out prototype versions and was not able to actually sync the iPhone with a Proximity - though the promised functionality is simple enough. Using Bluetooth, the watch will sync its time and date from the phone, alert you to incoming calls, SMS messages, and e-mails. It will also tell you if you have a missed call. If you have a calendar appointment or event, the watch will let you know that you have something to do. One other function is that you can search for your phone using the Proximity watch. This likely has the watch make the phone ring or something similar when the search function is activated.

The legacy of Gerald Genta lives on now with even more Bulgari-ness. The original Gerald Genta Octo was a fascinating timepiece with a range of complicated movements. The "Octo" name referred to the eight-sided case, and unfortunately there are no tentacles related to this product. While certainly unique, I have to say that the Octo looks quite nice on the wrist. Bulgari continues with the now iconic case with a new watch simply called the Octo.

The NSR 100 watches look like something Tag Heuer would release for kids. But these watches aren't kid-sized. With feelings that say "your first Tag Heuer Formula 1," the watches are actually pretty handsome with just enough details to be both interesting and classy. I suddenly need a lime green dive-style watch in my life. An easy-to-read dial and proper proportions on the dials will likely make these hot sellers. I take it that color options such as pink, light blue and purple suggest that these are unisex timepieces.

Inside the GP Foudroyante Rattrapante (say that five times fast) is an in-house made Girard-Perregaux Caliber 8020 automatic movement. The case of the watch is highly polished with brushed sides and I like the no frills caseback which is just a nice piece of polished steel. Attached to the watch is a fitted reptile strap for a nice refined look. There is a lot to like about this incredibly unpretentious high-end timepiece. Price isn't that bad either considering the complications and the brand. Another upside is that this is a chronograph mechanism you'll love to use because watching it in action is so fun. Brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre even built watches with constant foudroyante hands because some people like watching them all the time.

Even after a few years on the market, the Seamaster Ploprof 1200M is a strong seller, but it isn't cheap. Then again, it wasn't cheap back in the early 1970s either. Has the design become more sexy over the years? Even by female standards? I can't speak for women, but I think it certainly has gained a degree of honorary elegance given what it is. No one I presented the watch to thought it was unattractive. As I discussed above, I think anyone can appreciate its tool watch spirit, as well as find great and sincere beauty in that fact. As an instrument, it works rather flawlessly. Retail price for the Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200M watch is ,400 on the strap and ,700 on the bracelet (as seen ref.

A first glance, the Bomber Regulator looks like a chronograph, but the single crown should easily remove that idea. A regulator style watch has three dials in total. Typically, the main dial is used for the minutes, while subdials are used for the hours and seconds. These watches are based on historic regulator clocks which were supposed to be highly accurate clocks people referenced in order to "regulate" other timepieces.
