A Speedy Fan Talks About The New Speedmaster X-33

For more pics, you can check out this post on WatchUSeek where a lucky member shows off his PAM 358. There you can see the interesting chunky curves of this PAM-beast, with its titanium 1950 style case and built in helium escape valve. Dial is pretty standard with the typical Pamerai sub watch look. I think the inner bezel with the diver's scale is an interesting touch. Hands are too stubby though. Does someone actually like stubby hands? Or am I one of the few people who notice these things? Still legible though. Inside the watch is a Swiss Valjoux 7750 automatic movement that has been modified and turned around. The chronograph has been removed, and flipping the watch movement around placed the subsidiary seconds dial on the right side of the case, and the crown on the right. Came on a light brown leather strap. Chronopassion made a good choice with this special piece. These are very hard to find, and with just 100 around, you are lucky to ever get one. There is one now on James List for just under ,000.

MotoGP is a worldwide event, with events occurring in a number of countries. Tissot is clever to team up with the race series as it is truly an international phenomenon, with exposure all over the planet. On the track itself are Tissot signs, and the winner of the race (as well as the pole position aware) receive Tissot watches. It is really hard to disassociate Tissot and MotoGP. This is a partnership done right, and if you are a MotoGP fan, chances are you'll have, or have your eyes on a number of Tissot watches.

I know that the next time I visit John his office will be different. Fully moved in, the big watch boss’s operation will take the products and personalities that are so obsessed over in Europe and do the necessary task of actually selling them. The thing that no one liked to mention often is that the luxury watch industry relies on people continually buying new, highly expensive watches. Collector’s get their “watch fix” and everyone is happy. The industry needs that stream of interest that keeps clients coming back for more. John’s role is perhaps not as appreciated as it should be. He plays the ongoing games of making the buyers happy. This involves not only learning about new products, but resolving their issues during and post sale — something that the brand themselves are notoriously bad at. While Simonian is a big boss, he is also an army. Fighting the good fight that keeps the watch industry gears lubricated.

When I was visiting with Casio at their rather massive room at Baselworld 2010, it was  almost an overwhelming, colorful adventure of Casiotopia. The G-Shock area was probably the most interesting to me because those Japanese designers frequently have something stimulation each year that you don't expect. This year it was a watch with a surprisingly affordable watch. Not like any Casio is unaffordable, but given the rise in quality and prices in Citizen and Seiko, I was expecting some similar high-end stuff from Casio. For me, one of their major 2010 stars was a very inexpensive watch - and I think most people will like it. At just and coming in a range of really fun colors - this Casio GA100 X-Large Combi line of timepieces hits a sweet spot catering both to G-Shock enthusiasts, and people who are often turned off by digital only watches.

Assuming the size does jive with you, then you'll be happy to hear about the rest of its details. The bezel is polished steel, while the rest of the watch is in a satin finish. Sapphire crystal with very good AR coating, and the environmental resistance that Sinn watches are known for (suitable for low pressure environments, OK between -45 t0 80 degrees Celsius, and water resistant to 100 meters).

The watch is large but really comfortable. These watches are meant to make a statement. At 47mm wide, I am surprised the piece fits so well on my wrist, but it does. Case is in steel and black PVD coated. Stefan opted for a thin bezel so that you could get maximum dial size. This design is actually quite uncommon on pieces this big. Though at the same time future Stefan Johansson Vaxjo watches are going to have a case and bezel redesign. The smooth looking black case is not the highlight of the piece, and the design makes that clear. The case is good looking and comfy, but like I said, your eyes are pulled toward the dial. The Mark VIII line has quite a lot of dial treatments to choose from. Stefan likes playing with the look. Each has a common personality though, and I think you will appreciate how he plays with the core concept that is the watch. The watches each contain a decorated Swiss ETA automatic Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. The subsidiary seconds dial at 9 o'clock is removed for a more symmetrical dial. If you need to count the seconds, you can simply use the chronograph.

The case is made out of Angular Momentum's new preferred steel - Staybrite 1.4435 Ncu that is specially resistant to corrosion and is very high quality. The case is 46mm wide and 12mm thick. The lugs are singular and like large knobs at the ends of the case. The strap is a very rustic looking natural rubber. The dial has the special luminant in green and blue applied right onto the "lemon" gold face. It isn't easiest to tell in the images, but the dial is in fact gold. This creates the dial design. The hands are further covered in lume and are very wide. Actually, the hands are milled in the middle and lume enamel is filled in to the new space. This is a called Plique à Jour, while the style of the dials enamel application is called Champlevé. Angular Momentum placed a lume covered metal disc over the hand where they connect to the pins. This is a new style for Angular Momentum that enhances the look of the watch even further.

It has been a few months since I was in Japan visiting with Seiko. Shortly thereafter I wrote about the Spring Drive versions of their newish and impressive Seiko Ananta line of watches. If you recall, Ananta is Seiko's first line of high-end watches for the world market. The watches totally changed my perception of the brand, and I think if you check them out they will change the way you look at Seiko as well. The Spring Drive watches aren't cheap. While they are a great value for the money, the Seiko Ananta Spring Drive Chronograph watch can still get up to the ,000 - ,000 range. This is a larger amount of money than many people are able to spend on a watch - an important point as Seiko is such a globally "worn" brand. In addition to the Spring Drive movement based watches, the Ananta line comes in three different automatic mechanical movement forms. If you don't know the difference between a Seiko Spring drive and normal automatic movement, I suggest you check out the article above, or search for "Spring Drive" on aBlogtoRead.com. No time to get into that now. Going back to these three "other" Ananta watches, there is the Automatic Chronograph, Double Retrograde Automatic, and the Multi-hand Automatic. Each model has a lot of appeal, and the collection has prices well below the higher-end Spring Drive models.

What really sets this watch apart from most aviator watches is the unique way of incorporating contemporary military styling into classic aviator dial. And it's not a simple cosmetic chance since it improves the readability of the watch quit nicely. For me this is one of the easiest reading watches out there, simple, clean and most of all utilitarian. Just what aviator watches should be about.

N.O.A Watches At Baselworld 2010 Watch Releases

The BR01-93 GMT is currently one of my favorite watches in the BR01 lineup. It looks good, is easy to read, and simply feels fun. I use the terms fun a lot these days when discussing watch. What I mean is a design that embellishes on its theme in a charming and polished manner. For example, the GMT hand didn't need to be made as big, or in orange, but it was, and it works well that way. There is something almost cartoonish about it, and that to me, is fun.

In fact, Christiaan van der Klaauw (CVDK) pretty much only makes "astronomical watches." The Planetarium has the smallest such complication in the world on the dial. Even before clocks existed, there were astrological devices meant to track the heavens. The watch movement is a heavily modified ETA 2824 with a hell of a module on it. Aside from the time, the watch has an annual calendar with the month and the date, as well as a planetarium that shows the relative placement of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn around the sun. What? No Uranus? I would have totally given a small shout out to Pluto as well... you know, for old times' sake.
